When a gas, liquid, or transparent sample is irradiated with monochromatic light having a wavelength much smaller than the particle size of the sample, most of the light is transmitted, while a small portion is scattered at different angles, causing scattering.

In addition to Rayleigh scattering at the same frequency as the incident light, there is a symmetric and dispersed series of Raman spectral lines with very weak beams shifted from the frequency of the incident light. This phenomenon is called the Raman effect. Since the length of the Raman spectral line is directly related to the vibrational or rotational energy level of the sample molecule, information about the vibrational or rotational state of the molecule can be obtained.
