What is RoHS and Why is it Important?

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), known in Turkish as Belirli Tehlikeli Maddelerin Kullanımının Kısıtlanması Directive, is an international environmental standard that limits the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic devices. Also recognized as an environmental certification, RoHS compliance represents conformity with European Union and American environmental regulations.

Under this directive, the use of hazardous heavy metals such as Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr⁶⁺), PBB, and PBDE in electrical and electronic products has been banned by the European Union since July 1, 2006. RoHS standards help electronic manufacturers reduce the use of elements harmful to the environment and human health, contributing to the development of sustainable, environmentally friendly, and safe products.

RoHS analysis is a fast and reliable test performed using XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) devices. This analysis determines the concentration of heavy metals in products and generates a RoHS compliance report. WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), known in Turkish as Atık Elektrikli ve Elektronik Ekipman (AEEE) Directive, is an environmental regulation (2002/96/EC) adopted by the European Parliament and the Council.

This directive aims to ensure the recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment and its environmentally responsible disposal.

The WEEE Directive is an important regulation supporting environmental sustainability in response to the rapidly increasing amount of electronic waste (e-waste). It mandates the proper collection, separation, recycling, and reuse of electrical and electronic devices at the end of their life cycle.

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is a European Union regulation concerning the registration, evaluation, authorisation, and restriction of chemicals.

The REACH regulation was established to ensure the safe use of all chemical substances in the European market, aiming to protect human health and the environment.

This regulation is one of the most comprehensive systems in the field of chemical safety worldwide and evaluates products sold in the EU market under three main categories:

  • Substances (e.g., pure chemicals),

  • Mixtures (e.g., paints, detergents, coating solutions),

  • Articles and products (e.g., electronic devices, metal parts, plastic components).

Why is REACH important?
The REACH regulation requires manufacturers and importers to record the content of the chemicals they use, the conditions for their safe use, and their potential environmental impacts. In this way, the uncontrolled use of chemicals harmful to human health is prevented, and sustainable production processes are promoted.

Even if a product complies with RoHS standards, this does not always mean it is also compliant with REACH regulations. Therefore, manufacturers must ensure that their products comply with both environmental regulations.

Differences Between WEEE and RoHS Directives

The WEEE (AEEE) Directive and RoHS Directive, although they cover similar test materials, have different purposes.
The WEEE Directive regulates the recycling and reuse of electrical and electronic waste in order to protect the environment, while the RoHS Directive aims to ensure human health and environmental safety by restricting the use of hazardous substances in electronic devices.

Both regulations complement each other in terms of sustainable production and the preservation of natural resources. In this context, ten product categories such as large and small household appliances, information and communication equipment, lighting products, medical devices, toys, and industrial control systems constitute the main application area of these directives.  

As a result, RoHS focuses on the restriction of hazardous substances during the production phase, whereas WEEE focuses on recycling and waste management at the end of the product’s life cycle. Compliance with both directives provides businesses with conformity to EU environmental standards and a sustainable brand image.
